1232 Jon with 8 hp Johnson

Hello Everyone, I have a 1232 Jon and can get an 8HP 1992 Johnson to put on it. My question is will this be too much power for this boat? It is rated for 6hp but was not sure is the 8 hp would be a problem. Any idea of top speed if using the 8 hp? Any info. would be great. Thanks in advance for the info.

You'll be ok with the 8hp.I know people that have 10 or 15 hp on same boat & are ok.

I agree, I'm running an 8 hp on the 12' and have no issues.

My 12' springbok (aka: princecraft) is rated for a 15 HP.

I have an 89 8hp johnson on it right now and it moves along quite smartly on plane.

Isnt the horsepower rating a coast guard mandated regulation and ticketable?

Thanks for the info. guys. I ran the 8 hp on it tonight and it got on plane and up to 18 mph. This was a lot faster then to 8-9 mph my 3 hp pushed it. It did not seem like too much power either. I was worried about all the weight in the back so I put the trolling motor and battery all the way up front. I could not be happier with the way it ran.
