Anyone know if it is possible to change out a tiller handle/ throttle with a newer version. The one I have is a pain. It is the kind with the notches for the throttle. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Take a couple hours of your time and remove each piece including the horizontal metal gears/shafts, the two plastic gears inside the lower engine pan plus the vertical throttle shaft, clean any corrosion away, lubricate all pieces and return it to service. Should be nice and free. I have several of these style tiller engines. Have cleaned and lubed each one and they work easily. To answer your question directly....no, you cant change to the cable/helix style.

I agree that you cant change over to the helix throttle. You would have to remove the whole powerhead and change out the lower cover(pan)to the newer style. Then the newer style tiller will adapt. You would need the new tower-shaft and all the associated parts from the donor motor.

Pappy's advice is far more practical. If the parts have been run dry and forced over periods of time; the gear and shaft may need replacing. The mating gear in the pan could also be worn down. These parts together are over $100 at the dealer.

When removing the lower towershaft gear in the pan, be careful of the retaining pin. To remove it, gently pry it up using two small screw drivers together working off the inside surface of the gear. If you can even find this little plastic pin, it's over $20. Careful with yours.

Use the OMC type 'A' lube or equivalent. Triple-Guard grease is too stiff.
