1984 mariner 40hp

i just bought a 84 model 40hp mariner from my dad it runs good at idle but when you have it wide open on the water it runs for a bit then drops back down to idle but dont die so he has to take out of gear and redo it and the samething happens again what would cause that

Could be a lot of things. Overheating. Fuel starvation. Ignition issues. Etc.

Ok i know i need to replace the water pump impeller. ill try that and other options.

Does it have overheat protection on that motor? I know my 84 25hp Mariner doesn't have it but yours may. When you say "it drops back down to idle", do you mean it will drop all the way down to a smooth idle while you're holding the throttle wide open?
