so I have a 76 evinrude 85 horse it's currently being rebuilt and it's in a bunch of pieces. can I put the battery in and connect it to the ignition and everything so I have power to the gauges I wanna check all the wiring and make sure it's all connected right.

You can check power to the gauges simply by connecting a power lead to the B terminal of any gauge and the ground to the G terminal.
If they are hard to read back there in the dark then usually the purple or red lead is power, black to ground. Wont hurt a thing.

I believe the battery lead to the ignition is a purple/red wire so I can just make a jump from the positive terminal to the red/purple at the big red plug. than the same with the ground wires. that should make the gauges kick on when I turn the key correct?
