I need to remove the engine from the back of my boat, in order to have it repaired. What is the best way to store the engine without a stand?

I haven't discussed repairs with the dealer, because I refuse to drive 800 miles to have it fixed. I want to remove the engine because there is a crack on the top of the transom.

I do not have a stand on hand, and don't know anyone that has one. The engine only weighs 230 lbs, so its completely manageable. My thoughts are to drain the oil reservoir and set it on some blocks of wood as if it were tilted all the way up on the transom.

For the effort involved, and the potential cost of damage to that motor, I'd make my own stand out of some 2x4's. won't cost more than $15-$20 for the wood, and then you can set it on the stand and be comfortable that nothing will get damaged.

Doesn't need to be fancy, and with the weight you've got, 2x4's are fine.

A couple of simple ideas:

Good luck!

Ditto the simple stand! Also best to leave it upright.

Somewhere in my files I have build plans for one for small to < V4 OBs that is made out of one 10 or 12' length of pressure-treated 2 by 4. Just use the proper treated decking screws and it will last for a long time!

Hang on a minute....according to your profile you are in Vero Beach?
Why the 800 miles? You have one of the best dealers in Florida down in Ft. Pierce!!! St. Lucie Outboard.
Call Vickie and let her know what is going on with the engine. 772/464-1440 if memory serves me correctly.
While there get Bud to take a look at your transom and give you some ideas to help you along. They also do
fiberglass repairs.

Sorry, its the boat that needs to be repaired, and the engine needs to be removed for that.

I'm well aware of St. Lucie Outboard. They do tons of work on our law enforcement boats. They do awesome work though!

I need to change my info on here, just relocated to Give Sound.

You can make a simple stand in a few hours out of used wood like this. Nothing to it. With a cross brace in the front and some Harbor Freight castors you could even make it a roller.
