My 2000 25 Yamaha 25 four stroke lost a magnet on the flywheel. Shop is wanting $700 to replace it, flush the motor, and change the oil. Sounds high to me, what about you guys?

Go here and pick out your model number:

https://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/2000/parts.html

then look under the "Generator" category.

Looking at the F25ELHY model, the "Rotor" which is your flywheel, is part #65W-85550-01-00

A quick search of Ebay shows two available, one used and one new:

New - $425: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-65W-85550-01-00-ROTOR-ASSY-/201457512903?hash=item2ee7cdb1c7:g:lDQAAMXQUmFSj-Ov&vxp=mtr

Used - $231: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-2006-Yamaha-25HP-outboard-motor-rotor-assembly-65W-85550-01-00-/281874238079?hash=item41a1038a7f:g:gdwAAOSwwE5WYBX8&vxp=mtr

Not sure how you are with used parts, but for me, with something like a flywheel, used is almost as good as new.

it shouldn't take much more than 15 min to swap it out. $700 is far to high in my opinion. Even with new parts and a $90/hr rate, you shouldn't be paying more than $550 for the change out. That's assuming that nothing else is wrong.

Good luck!

Well it depends on what the dealer charges for labor, and what they charge for the part.

Usually the dealers' parts are going to be a little more expensive than what you'll find online.

Could also be an issue of the dealer estimating the cost on the high side, as most of them do. That way, if for some reason they ran into something else that needed to be replaced, they wouldn't have to call you with more bad news.

If the magnet came off, was the stator damaged? Haven't heard of a magnet coming off without the flywheel being struck hard enough to jar one loose. Even then, it'll stick to the flywheel....most of the time. If it came loose while the engine was running, the stator is likely damaged and that combined with the flywheel and labor, would easily add up to $700.
