Here in Texas it's hard to find a good used 15 horse or less motor at a decent price with a title.

So I'm thinking about a new motor but holy cow!!!

I don't think I can afford it. Plus my transom is a little on the light side. I have a 1950 lonestar 14' that I'm adding a floor too. My question is how efficiently will a 5 horse motor push my little boat with 2 guys. I'm not interested in pulling a tube or anything just want to navigate some rivers and venture into open water without worrying about battery or getting overwhelmed.

Here in Texas if the outboard hasn't been titled before your able title it in your name without an issue. It's the route I have and will choose again. Just make sure the seller has had the outboard a couple years[emoji6]

In the link below is the Texas parks and wildlife link to retrieve ownership info. Read and accept the terms. It's free... You get the serial number on the outboard your inquiring about and put it in the system. It's really simple. Try using this one. Seller did it was never titled... 5174969

Probably the best bang for your buck would be a 9.9hp Johnson or Evinrude 2-stroke.
They are reasonably priced when compared to a 15hp and can be turned into close to 15hp with little effort or made to make all of 15hp with a little more effort and not much investment.
As they stand they will plane your boat and get you where you want to go very nicely compared to 5hp.
