I've always wondered, when you put the power trim in the full UP or DOWN position until it hits the end, how does it not strain or break itself? Is there a limiting switch inside the power trim unit or something?

Usually there's an internal bypass. When the cylinder(s) bottom out in their bore, the bypass opens and the motor/pump just pumps fluid through the bypass. Years ago I had one in the shop that the bypass was stuck "shut" and the pump generated enough pressure, bottomed out full up position, to actually bust the housing.

The pump will keep pumping until pressure builds and opens a pressure relief valve.....if it can build enough static pressure. Usually that valve only opens when hitting a submerged object.
Since the motor keeps running as long as it has power there is a thermal cut-out switch built into most motors that will stop the motor until the switch cools and the process starts again.
