I have an older (1980?) mercury 20 horse. My buddy told me to use 89 octane instead of 87..... Says, "them old motors run better on higher octane". Is he right? I have heard to never do that in cars that don't specifically call for it so I am a bit leery. Thanks!

Good question! I never ran regular 87 in my old car. I guess BassBoy will give us an answer.

Not sure about the mercs, but many of the older Johnnyrudes prefer 87, and won't run as well on higher stuff. On others, it is just a wash, and not worth the extra $. All our vehicles, outboards, lawnmowers, etc run on 87. The only thing that we get higher stuff for is coleman lanterns, as white gas is very similar to the 93 (I think - been a while) gas.
