1996 25 hp Mariner electric start tiller on craigslist, what is the reputation of these motors? If it is still there when I make it home, I thought about checking it out. Compression check, see it run, etc as suggested on this site. He is asking $1000 or bo.
Although the tree in the boat gives me pause, hopefully its just branches off the tree.

From the pic. that looks like a pretty clean motor, if you are interested in it, I would definitely check it out.

Could be a mercosil block. The word "mercosil" is stamped into teh block if it is. Not a big deal really-google it. If it's not mercosil, it's chrome-lined (which cannot be bored). The tiller handles are short. Shifter is in the throttle. You rotate the throttle toward you as if you were going to rev the engine, that's how you shift to forward gear. Rotate backwards to get to reverse. This also means you cannot rev the engine in neutral, so if the engine becomes flooded, for whatever reason, you can't throttle up. I hated them for that reason and a couple others. IIRC, the water pump is weird. The telltale (pee hole) pees when it's up to operating temperature, but not as much when the thermostat closes.

Other than that, they're decent motors. Nothing special but they are decent. $1000 would be what I'd consider top dollar, but it's a clean motor best I can tell from the picture (can't see the foot or prop), and if that's what you want, go for it. If you can get the seller down to around $750, it'd be worth getting for sure!
