I've heard the big foot is geared to push heavier craft like pontoons and barges.

How do you tell the difference

I Googled 'Mercury Bigfoot versus?' Lots of info out there a lot of it from dealers, mechanics and people who have had them. I'd say it was 50/50 pro/con.

On the newer models, 40-60hp with fuel injection, it's a 115hp gear case and different ratio gears and a big cavitation plate. The intention is to help with heavy and bulky boats and pontoons that tend to be hard to plane and turn. Also commercial users, like work barges or rental owners. But on the early carburetor models I can't find mfg info or pics. In 15 years I've never seen one on a boat or at a launch that looked any different than mine.
