This motor came with an old boat and trailer I bought and id like to use it on my new tracker 1542,Its a 1981 7.5 hp and It starts right up but all I'm able to do is idle. The previous owner found a tiller handle replacement kit on eBay for $125,I'd like to find a cheaper kit or try and fix it if you guys think it's possible.Any help is much appreciated.Im hoping this motor is worth keeping and fixing up.

Between Ebay and other OEM parts sources you should have no problem getting her running again.

.

check https://www.marineengine.com to see if they have a parts manual for that model.
(to look at - and print - the full parts list is free - and they have millions of parts on hand.
if not, check E-Bay with the part numbers you need).

This may be the parts manual you need: https://www.ebay.com/itm/392300-OMC-Evinrude-Johnson-1981-Outboard-4-5-7-5-HP-Parts-Catalog-Final-/132177040194?hash=item1ec65d9342:g:wKoAAOSwuMZZBskj&vxp=mtr

I have a tiller from an 18 hp Evinrude that looks similar. Let me know when you look it up if compatible. You can have it. Pretty sure it is 1968, however.

This looks like the correct part number: PN 0395472 sold as a complete assy:

https://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1981&hp=7.5&model=J8RCIC&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Exhaust+Housing

(Part number 47)

a couple on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BG1T1842-1983-4-5-HP-Evinrude-E5RHLCTA-Tiller-Arm-with-Cables-PN-0395472-/122466122476?hash=item1c838cbaec:g:pBcAAOSwcUBYOb7Q&vxp=mtr

Ebay is very easy to find old parts... just put in Johnson and the part number you're looking for.
