I get 1994 ... in your instance disregard the 1st two columns of the chart below.

1st row of info
20MSHS = Model#, where

20 = Horsepower
M = Manual tilt & start
S = 15" leg
H = Tiller
S = Year of manufacture in 1994

2nd row of info
Left = Model code
Middle digit = OB height
Right = Serial number

Does that '20MSHS' coding match what you have?

Thank you Dale. Think what was throwing me off was the stamped "z" on bottom right hand corner.
Looking online I understand some motors have the year stamped there indicating it's a 2001?

I’ve never seen that before and would surmise that a Dealer did that, perhaps to indicate a major recall correction or repair has already been done to that 1994 motor in 2001.

Just to venture a guess ...

I think the bottom right code is for identification if it's "exported" to somewhere other than North America. Still comes up as a 94 with the Z stamp, though.

Yeah it's a '94. They didn't make the 20hp 2 stroke but for just a few years. It wasn't popular, manual start only as I recall. The 25hp is the exact same block. I think the carbs are different but don't hold me to that as there may be other differences that I ain't aware of.
