90 wt will work, true lower unit oil has additives in it where in case water does come in the picture it will still hold up much better. That is somewhat primitive in describing it but true.

In my Mercury motors that I bought new I use mercury oils.. in everything else, I use generic 90wt marine oil from canadian tire. ( I know you can't get that in the U.S.) So using any type of Marine gear oil from a reputable brand should be ok..

I have used Quicksilver, Supertech, and Lucas.

Supertech does not emulsify water very well. When I had a lower unit leak, there was always a little bit of crystal clear water in the bottom. Not so with Quicksilver and Lucas.

Otherwise I haven't noticed much of a difference.
