Good morning,

I recently bought a boat and want to install a tach for monitoring my rpms. The problem is, I’m not sure where to begin. I have found some that include just a wire the wraps around a plug wire. Other units have 3 wires are hard wired in. But I can’t figure out where to run the 3rd wire I’m trying to install this on a 2018 40hp 4-stroke mercury.

I’d appreciate any info you can give me.

I’m familiar with the Tiny Tach type tachometer/ hour meter. The ones I’ve installed have two wires, the ground wire, usually white, is connected to the engine block. The red, is wrapped around the plug wire. Then it’s just matter of finding the right setting for your engine. I’ve had a couple cheap ones fail due to getting rained on. It,s worth getting one that is water resistant or installing it where it won’t get wet.
