Looking for advice and reccommendations for a GPS.I am getting into
inshore saltwater fishing. I think I need a depth feature and
a chartplotter more than anything else.
Should I look for handhelds or a unit mounted to the
boat.As you probably can tell I don't know a lot about these
units.
My budget is 3-400 all in
Thanks,

If you want depth you need a transducer mounted to the boat. They make ones that can go on temporarily but if you have one boat you fish out of, get a dedicated sonar/GPS chartplotter.

J,
thanks for the reply,
there are a lot of choices and it can be a
little overwhelming but I am going
to follow your advice.
Thanks again,

I have a Humminbird Helix 5 DI GPS which is pretty reasonable. I also find it real easy to use. Whatever you get be prepared for an additional cost for a detailed map chip/software. The units come pre-loaded with very basic map info, you will want detailed charts to accompany your chartplotter. If you are fishing saltwater hopefully someone else can chime in, I primarily fish inland lakes so I may not be the best to guide you there.
