Would a 7.5 Mercury be able to put a 14' tin on plane? The boat weighs about 175 lbs, and the people/equipment would weigh roughly 500 pounds. And in general, is this a decent motor? Not sure on the year, looks roughly 1970ish.

Thanks guys.

A 2003 6hp longshaft 4-Stroke Tohatsu got my 1436 w/15" transom on plane. Boat weight=135lbs & gear and people weight=600lbs+. I would assume you should be okay with a 7.5hp as long as it's running right.

i use a 1986 7.5 on my 12ft and it works well, i have to use about half choke when i run full throttle though, sometimes it seems like i get a bit of cavitation since it is a long shaft but over all it works well.

edit: just realized this is an old thread.

FYI. Here's a video of a 6hp planing a 14' tin...
