I dont know much about these sterling boats, but I know its a 1408 and I picked it up with everything you see here. A 9.9 merc motor, 2 trolling motors, 2 fish finders and the 3 seats. Its in great shape but I just want to add my own touch to it. I want to extend the deck to the middle seat complete with new carpeting and tuck all the wires ect.

I hope the previous owner was getting some compensation from Rapala and bass pro for all of that advertising...

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I have finally gotten the courage and energy to start working on my boat. I will be completely stripping it down tomorrow, and I did a bit of a sketch on paint to get some feedback (good and bad, don't be scared :D) from you guys. Does anyone see anything that should be changed around? The space between the middle and back seat will just be carpeted and kept low. Both front and back decks will be framed with aluminum.. I could do it myself using wood but I'm just worried it will all be to heavy, so I found a welder that will do all the framing at a reasonable price.

Please, all comments are welcome. :D

After a long night.. a lot of smoking and just a bit of drinking she's finally stripped down. The previous owner did a piss poor job on the decking as you can see in picture 002.

Now its time to get her cleaned up and tested for leaks.

Wish me luck! :D

I had a day off from work today so I kept myself busy. I decided not to power wash just yet but to remove the transom and the old paint. Definitely not a easy task getting rid of 4 coats of paint. I bought a can of "Super Remover" which really made it a lot easier along with a wire brush and drill. As soon as I brushed this stuff on it immediately started to bubble up, great product. There is still a bit of red paint, but I'm sure a coat of primer will cover it up. Now it's time to weld some holes and start looking into marine paint.

No progress today, need to weld 14 holes where the old transom was.. yes, the factory put 14 screws in the transom! Looked around online for a aluminum welder and found a couple. The first guy I called wanted $250 to weld those holes... so I called another guy. I found one about 20 mins from my place and he's charging me $100 which I think is fair.

I've made up my mind and decided to use gluvit on the inside bottom of the boat right up to where the decking will start and use steelflex on everything else.

As for the decking, I've been looking at a lot of builds on here and I've decided to frame in aluminum. The thing is.. is it worth it to get all of my frame work welded? Would it be stronger then using rivets? I'm not comfortable doing everything in rivets.

Here are some small updates..

Great job on boat!!

Got a question. Did your boat have sand bags in the back seat of the u on either side? I have tha same boat and the sand bags inside the very back seat of the u on either side of boat and are broke with sand coming out of drain on boat.

The seat appear not to be modified.

Why are there sand bags in there anyways? What are their purpose and can they be removed?

Thanks

Sandbags? Nope, no sandbags in mine.. just some styrofoam. Im not sure why there would be sandbags.

Finally.. PROGRESS!!!

Got the deck templates cut out, just need 1 more hatch for the battery at the bow. Will be picking up some vinyl soon.

Finally!!! Paint is complete.

Before primer, I pressure washed and scrubbed the boat with some dish washing soap. Made sure I got every spot. I let it air dry, scrubbed with acetone and began the tedious primer job.

This is the paint I used: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-your-home/paint-products/impervo-interior-exterior-alkyd-high-gloss-enamel?lang=en_US&role=H#advs=0&tab=2

I hope I made a good choice with the zinc chromate/paint combo.

Nice job looks good. Are you going to paint the inside of the boat too?

So the boat is complete, and I dont think I could have done it without the help of the people on here. Thanks everyone. I wish I had pictures of my transom being done and my wiring but I dont. I used 2 peices of 3/4in marine ply with 3 coats of 2 part epoxy, I had to install one of the inside and one on the outside pinching the aluminum because I couldnt get both to fit on the inside.

The 9.9 merc (with a bigger carb :p ) and hydrofoil put the boat on plane quite well. I clocked in at 16mph with my self, my gf, all my gear, 2 batteries, that heavy plywood/carpet and the tm.

I have taken it on the water 4 times now and everything has gone smoothly. Exceptionally stable to  I was up front on the tm standing all day with my gf standing/sitting and no problems.

Any questions, please ask.
