I have a chance to pick one of these up fairly cheap ($1000) with a running 1983 Mercury 40hp motor..........What are the things I should be wary of?

with that kind of age i would want a mechanic to check the compression on all cylinders and the seals in the foot. at very least look at the oil in the foot.
i would also check around the batteries for corrosion caused by leaks.

Check for cracks in the hull and corrosion on the transom.

Its gonna look rough, but that's ok. Everything can be fixed or cleaned.

The absolute best thing you can do is put it in the water and drive it. Look for leaks and feel how the engine runs. I know its not always possible to test drive a boat though.

Thanks.....I bought it and it is awesome........needs some cosmetic upgrades and will be a great project.......
