Sorry, my last thread didn't really go anywhere, the old Sears Gamefisher is now on craigslist because I finally found a boat I was looking for through some craigslist dealing, a beat up old Lowe 1436. Here's a shot of it after a good scrubbing and pressure wash. The story I got was it started life pulling salmon nets on the Nisqually River then ran the Puyallup as a fishing boat. It had a wooden jack plate on it for a longshaft motor. A good look after it was cleaned up revealed lots of problems.

I had to plug weld the lower bolt holes for the wooden jackplate I remove when I discovered the cracked weld from a hard hit on the bottom center of the transom.

Both rails were cracked from a hard shot to the right side right were they meet the transom crner pieces and the transom bracket was completely broken.

3 of the ribs were cracked or outright broken in the back half ofthe boat so they got the torch. I plan to reenforce them with a floor as soon as I figure how I want to do it and find some material, most likely aluminum decking.

It didn't have any place to hook onto the bow for my trailer so I had to make something. A stainless steel u-bolt and a piece of 1/4" inch aluminum plate to reenforce the hull should do it.

I don't quite know yet either Gunny, maybe some aluminum floors, some raised swivel seats and pole holders to get her in some sort of fishing shape to start. Some new plywood for the transom. The stuff inside will have to wait until winter, seems more solid and looks like major surgery and the fish can't wait that long. Anyone know a good reason why everything on the transom is about 3" off center? I hate to think someone was that careless at the factory or maybe I got a Friday boat, but the serial number tag is obviously crooked too. I'll leave it that way only because it leaves more room on the left side for my trolling motor.

Thanks for sharing river, I'll thank you in advance for borrowing some of your ideas. Got some 1/4" plate from the guys over at Capital and fabbed up a new transom brace, if I break that one I probably deserved it.

I know, I just replaced the plywood, but that 1/4" aluminum plate was just calling to me. It ain't got the beauty and warmth of real wood but I'll never have to replace it again either.

First time on the water, a lot faster than my V hull with the Nissan 5 hp pushing. We got it up just shy of 15mph but it averages about 13 1/2. That'll do for now, I'll keep a lookout for a cherry 10hp.

Sitting around planning the last few days of the vacation and searching the forum for ideas when bricks popped into mind. I had a pile on the side of the house that used to be patio pavers prior to me building a covered porch on the back of the house. They had set around since last summer simple because I didn't know what to do with 'em. So I throw 'em on Craigslist, thinking what a great idea someone could pay me and haul the darn things off for me.

A nice older gentalman responded with an email almost immediately and came out this morning to pick them up. Turns out he lives on one of the lakes I started fishing this year. Better yet he used to work for fish and game so we spent an hour or so loading bricks and talking about fishing and hunting. He got the bricks he wanted and I got some project funds.

I spent the rest of the day updating the trailer to better fit the jon boat. I really wanted some guides but couldn't find anything I was looking for, both for helping load on windy days and so I can see my little trailer when I'm backing up to load the boat. Everything was $80 to $100 bucks and had to be ordered and I wasn't willing to pay that for something I didn't like and had to sit and wait for. So I stopped by Capital and picked up a 6' chunk of 1/4" x 2" bar stock and made my own. I need to pick up a cedar 2x4 and replace the wood thats mocked up and I'll wrap 'em in carpet. I'll have to paint the guide bars I made or maybe have them powder coated gray to match the galvanized trailer. I found a 12" flat urethane roller that I cut up into what I needed to replace the old rubber ones. I also found a pretty cool gunwale strap to tie down the back of the boat, no more old ratchet straps.

Going fishing tomorrow. Buddies going to bring his old 7hp he's selling so we can run it for a proof of life video. We caught our limit of trout last time he came down, should be a good time.

Raining when I woke up, so I loaded up the boat anyway. Dug around in the attic and found enough Army issue rain gear for me and my buddy. My little 5hp Nissan didn't care for the extra weight of my buddy in place of my son and she wouldn't get up on a plane, just pushed water at about 8 mph. So a 10 or 15 hp is in the future. Made a mental note of things I wanted while we were out. I decided the bench seats must go, especially mine at the tiller. I hated straddling it in my old boat and this one's worse since it's farther from the transom. It's going away in the new floor plan. The front bench needs to move forward about a foot to become support for a front deck to open up some more flat floor space. I need a rubber fishing net, I have a mesh one but forgot it and hate when the hook barb get caught in it. I bet I lost 5-6 fish today, including a big one right at the side of the boat. I found my last little leak, the drain tube was cracked where it meets the transom...a little more welding once it dries out. The battery needs to go up front under the deck too. I'm thinking now an aluminum floor with 2 seats on pedastals, a casting deck and storage up front. Oh yea, I need to convert a cooler into live well and a bilge pump for rainy days.

Hey papa, nice looking boat. By chance was your other boat a 12'? I currently had a 12' and have a chance at a 14' (flat jons) and wanted to know if there was a big difference between the 2 boats other than the 2' in length. The only diff in both beams is 3". thanks and good luck with your build

trueblue1970- Nah, my other boat was a 14' shallow V with nearly the same beam. Lots more usable space in the jon it seams. My buddy that fishes with me likes it and he usually fishes a 12' V. He's considering a 12' jon if he can find a 1236 for a desent price. I wanted a 14' because thats the biggest thing I can easily fit in the garage and I always fish with the kids or my buddy.

Did some shopping and picked up a cedar 2x4 and galvanized hardware for the trailer guides. I got the rub blocks cut and covered in carpet. I just have to clean up the backets I made and paint them. They worked just how I wanted, that 1/4" flat is strong enough to hold it's shape and has a little spring to it the helps absorb impacts and if the get bent a little you just bend 'em back. betcha can't do that with the cheap stuff the cataloge offered up for a $100. I had carpet, staples and some of the hardware already so the they cost me about $25 for the steel and some galvanized hardware and a cedar 2x4 and got exactly what wanted.

I made a simple little drop leg for the tounge out of some 1/8"x 2" bent up in the vice. A winch mast bolt and the spare tire U-bolt hold it in place and its short enough not to drag over bumps. Figured a trailer jack was overkill for that little trailer, it has worked nice so far.

Talking about boats and fishing at work today and my buddy is thumbing through his craigslist alerts when an old 15hp Gamefisher pops up for beer money. My buddy mentions it and I get serious and run out and see the guy. Sure enough it's pretty clean, and he throughs it in a barrel and runs it for me. Little hard to start but seems to run and shift fine once the fire is lit. The prop is still the original white with barely a nick in the paint, looks better than my new 5hp and I know its been babied. Still has the emergency shear and cotter pin in the inside corner of the cowl. The only thing I could find wrong with it was a couple of teeth missing from the plastic pullstart gear, which didn't seem to make much difference when he started it. He say it's an '81 but looking up the model on a random website indicates its an '80 made by Eska. My question, does anyone know where I can get parts and a manual for this thing and what kind of reputation they have. Finding parts seemed a little tough on my initial go around. I'd like to replace the starter gear and give it a tune-up.

I sold my other boat yesterday so I have the garage space to work inside again. Fixed my last leak around the drain tube waiting for the folks that bought my boat. I built up so weld around the tube and transom so hopefully that won't happen again. Even rebuilt the drain plug with a new piece of rubber since I didn't like the new one I bought. I got some seat posts and swivels and a new winch strap. Was planning on doing some construction tonight 'til the motor popped up. It may not be a long term solution but it'll give me a better idea of what kind of power I want when I do buy a new motor.

I have an ESKA 7hp outboard and i love it for the price i paid! mines in a little worse condition than yours but is reliable as hell! ESKA made outboards for a ton of people back in the day and the head is made by Tecumseh which is a great company. you can still get parts and schematics on sears website and there is several parts and service manuals on ebay as well...
