That's a good idea. I like that you would be re-purposing something broken and you could also cut it to length and finish it using run of the mill tools.
 
I am totally fine with avoiding four foot snakes randomly dropping in my boat, FormerParatrooper :lol:
 
Well I ended up building myself a fish club. I got two hiking poles for free at a garage sale, took the better of the two and cut it down to about 15". Then I ground down a bolt I had that had stripped threads so it just fit inside the tubing of the hiking stick. I painted the ground down bolt so it would not rust. Then I bought a small piece of iron water heater pipe and a thread on cap. Painted them black as well and wrapped the end of it in black duct tape. I wanted to build my own so I could have one with some good weight in the tip of it and this one is just what I was hoping for. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, especially being a $5 total investment. :lol:
