Yesterday I got to meet up with my son for a morning of surf fishing. We were catching a lot of bullheads, sand dabs (I think), and snagging the occasional crab. We kept moving down the beach and after about a quarter mile, whamo, we started mixing it up with the surf perch. Just about all the hits were in close on an incoming tide.

Bait was Berkeley Gulp Sand Worms and Smelt Minnows. The minnow baits had the most action. I was using an 8.5’ steelhead rod with a Carolina rig set up with a drop loop for a second hook. My son was using a basic hi-low surf rig on his surf rod. The Carolina rig turned out to be more productive. My son says it was the rig. I say it was my superior fishing skills.

We released all but three of the larger ones.

Great job LDUBS! I'm glad to see someone catching!
By the way, I'm sure it was the superior fishing skills! :D

Good catch. I try to surf fish with my son in NC at least once a year. Really fun.
