How do I remove the cowling from my recently acquired 1966 20 hp Johnson? It's the one on the right side of the photo:

Dig your finger around under the lower shroud where I have put the red circle. There should be a stamped lever under there. Pull that downward, lift the back half of the cowl, and slide backwards. There is a peg that fits into a slot at the front of the motor.
