OMC STARTERS

General question about starters..I am adding electric start to my motor and have purchased two parts motors and both starters when bench tested with my car battery do spin and the gear does spin up the shaft and immediately comes back down.I assume it should stay up while starter has 12v applied.Would this be a sign of a weak starter?Do they just not have enough centrifical force due to being week.One of them I took apart and cleaned well inside and the spiral gearing that the gear rides on to be thrust upwards.Brushes on the one I took apart seemed to have lots of material there.thanks.

Clean and lubricate the little gear that spins the bendix up on the shaft and see if it stays up.
