It's the driveshaft from the head to the lower unit that came out of the lower unit. It should come out of the head, or, bottom of crankshaft. I have the 1988 Johnson version, twin cylinder, it has the spot for the gas tank to mount on the rear. Only has forward and neutral. It actually planes a 12' aluminum with just me and the gas tank up forward.

Thanks for the information Fordman, I believe I have this one running as good as it can be expected. It has the recommended Champion plugs. and is pushing a 12' V aluminum to 24-25 MPH with just me.

The fuel pump can leak fuel into the crankcase if diaphragm is ruptured, might check that.

What oil did you use? the penzoil semi-synthetic I use burns very clean-little smoke for old two strokes.

Make sure throttle is wide open. years ago we got a new to us 25hp, 1st few times out I thought it was slower than our old one, found out the twist grip went to a point then got harder to turn. Going past that was wide open, and fast!
