56 Johnson 15 hp hard to start.

Just curious where do you have the throttle set at when you are trying to start it. If you are going by the band on the tiller and setting it at start try opening it up a little more. I have an AD-11, 7.5 hp that if you put it on start you will never get it started when cold, you have to open it...

Try your local dealer and marineengine.com works well for me.

    1966 evinrude 5hp?

+1, to what Pappy said (nice little motor and support your local dealer when you can). I have the Johnson version of that engine, an LD-10. Most all the parts are pretty easy to find with the prop being the hardest to locate. I happened to find a brand new one at my local dealer, it was packed...

    Vintage Johnson Motor . . . $40

If you really want a motor of that style, and they are fun to tinker with, I would go to the aomci.org site and try to find a meet in your local area. That is a fairly common type motor and you should be able to find a running one for $50. I prefer the TN series myself, they have a neutral...

    Thinking of purchasing a Nissan 18hp 2-stroke

Compression on my 15 is 140+, I would think the 18 should be in the same range.

    Thinking of purchasing a Nissan 18hp 2-stroke

They are a very good engine, well built and tough. I have a 1995 Tohatsu 15 hp and it runs very strong. The only issue I have had is getting some of the parts, once Tohatsu's get past 10 years old they really cut down on the parts they continue to make for them.

    low power

I've never had one of the 9.5's (just not my thing) but from what I've heard they are not overly powerful. I am thinking you were hoping for more than you will ever get from that motor.

Exhaust fumes are starving my '64 5.5 Evinrude.

Kismet, the 9.5 is a completely different animal and yes is was/is known to have problems sucking in it's own exhaust. Not to say it can't be happening but I would look for something else as your problem. Do you have any kind of insulation in the cowl that is maybe getting sucked over the carb...

    1955 Evinrude Aquasonic Fleetwin 7.5

At first glance it may appear to be a major task but it is not really that bad. Get out your trusty digital camera and start taking pictures, take a lot (they are cheap) start with the engine complete, before you take anything off, and do various angles. Once you take off the cowling and the...

Exhaust fumes are starving my '64 5.5 Evinrude.

Why did you have the carb rebuilt, was the engine not running right before that was done? If it wasn't running properly before the rebuild is it doing the same only worse now? We know the engine was designed to run with the cowling on and if it was running properly before the rebuild but not now...

    How much is it worth?

I'm with Johny25, unless it is really something special you would never see $500 for one of those around here, even from a dealer. That is not to say they are not good engines, they are (I have a 60 & 61 both run very good) but I would expect no more than $350ish for a good, clean, tuned up...

NEWB Needs advice: 1961 Evinrude Sportwin 10hp Model 10022

Good for you, keep us posted as to how things are progressing. I would do a compression test on the engine before I got to involved just to make sure I had a good base to start with.

NEWB Needs advice: 1961 Evinrude Sportwin 10hp Model 10022

Brandon, Good old engine you have there, I have one myself, it is the engine I use most on my Scott Canoe Hudson Bay freighter, it will push it along at about 14 mph. Follow the link below it will give you a lot of good reading and pointers as to tuning her up to run right...

    15 horse yamaha

Had one on a 14 foot sylvan utility deep-v, always just used the prop that came on it. With just me and my fishing stuff it would run the boat around 23-24mph, with one other person 19-21 ish. Should be a good engine for you.

Engine slows then dies at WOT- 1960 18hp Johnson Seahorse

who pooted, On your last post you said you have had your fuel line (tank to engine) for 8 years, check to make sure you are not sucking air at one of your fittings, change the o-rings and check to make sure your clamps or tie straps are tight. You might get lucky with the noise you hear in the...

Engine slows then dies at WOT- 1960 18hp Johnson Seahorse

I concur with what Pappy said earlier about coils they usually just cut out when they go. But it would not hurt to check them if you haven't, it is easy to do. Pull your recoil starter assy off, then you will see the top of the flywheel, there will be an inspection plate on it. Pull the plate...

Engine slows then dies at WOT- 1960 18hp Johnson Seahorse

Did you check your coils when you worked it over, if they are cracked you need new ones. Sounds like you might be losing fire on one then the other as they heat up, then once they cool down they start working again.

    7.5 Johnson to tinker with

Catsmith, in your first post you said the previous owner said the motor was stuck, is it? If it is, I would work on getting it unstuck before I done anything else. Depending on why it is stuck you may end up being better off to find another powerhead. Oh and by the way they are great little...
