Good Afternoon
I am in the middle of my conversion and would like to pick some brains. I have a couple of the aluminum hatches sold by Cabelas. Overall they are pretty nice but the way they did the lids has me wondering how I’m going to get them carpeted correctly. I meant to snap a few picks but ran out the door in a hurry to get to work on time so I will have to try and explain.
The lids are brake bent like you would normally see however they did not bend the hinge side. The hinge attaches to the underside of the lid with rivets running down through the top of the lid into the hinge. I was figuring on removing the hinge and wrap the carpet like you would on a normal lid and reattach but I don’t like the idea of the rivets being exposed. I have gone through a lot of time and money on this conversion and finishing the lid this way seems like it will look tacky. Another approach would be to leave the hinge attached and carpet the other three sides like normal then run the carpet up to the barrel of the hinge and trim it off there, but I’m afraid the carpet will eventually fray and end up looking like crap. I was hoping to get some insight from others here before proceeding.
Sorry for the long read!
