I bought this tank new from Dunhams about 2 weeks ago and have problems with it since day one. The fittings just leak constantly and I figured they would have sealed up by now, but no! What can I do about this?

Is it fuel leaking from the brass fitting where it goes into the plastic? If so, clean up both sides of the threads REALLY well, wrap the male end neatly with four or five wraps of teflon tape, and screw it in until its snug. Should work.

If its air leaking from the where the two fittings come together .... then throw up your hands and scream "they don't make things like they used to."

I thought teflon tape was a no no since it could potentially break down and clog up the fuel system. But I am willing to try anything at this point!

I haven't heard that, but it certainly sounds plausible. Unfortunately a brass to plastic connection is prone to leaks .... I've had luck with teflon tape, but I'd hate for it to gum up the works down the road.

Don't know what Dunhams is .....

But, I guess this is a Non-Return item ?? (I would return it)

All tanks with brass to plastic will leak "some" but, not that much......
especially when it is a top fitting.

oh - - did you open the little vent nut on the cap ??
when that vent is closed, pressure will build up inside the
tank causing such a leak.

Dunhams is a sporting goods place, alot like Academy.

I open the vent when I'm out on the boat but usually close it when transporting. Guess I should leave it open all the time??

If you're concerned about regular (white) teflon tape being degraded by gasoline, you may want to consider using gas line tape instead. It's thicker than the teflon tape, yellow in color, and generally rated for use with petroleum products including gasoline.

Good luck,

Scott

Good to know! I will stop by Autozone tonight and look. Thanks!

They sell the yellow gas line tape at Home Depot and Lowes, too. It's usually in the aisle for HVAC supplies and natural gas plumbing.

Both tapes will break down in gasoline. Just make sure you don't have any of it going past the end of the threads.

Been discussed here before. Teflon tape not recommended as there are better solutions available: https://www.tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=29620&p=304950&hilit=Teflon+tape#p304950
