Gunwale Trim?

I am trying to cover/fill the seam between my new front casting deck and the gunwale (gunnel). The purpose is to keep water from entering the hull AND provide impact protection at the dock. I've tried using a piece of 1-1/2 rope but it is not holding up well. Thought about the round, foam pipe insulation but it is not durable enough.

Would appreciate any ideas.

Back in the olden days, when I was young, they used to caulk entire ocean-going ships with soft rope, tar, and a "caulking iron". With all of the high-tech caulking materials available today, I suspect your rope filler might just need some help?????

I don't know what your exact situation looks like but you might be able use a piece of rubber hose split down the middle instead of a rope.

Thanks for the replies. I tried 3M 5200 thinking nothing messes it up. Alas, the rope pulled away. The hose has potential. I'll keep you posted.

Here is what I did, got some garage door seal from HD and some outdoor double side tape and a few nuts and bolts. It works great.
