long shaft or short ?

i have a 1971 mirro craft 14 foot v bottom, am looking to buy a 9.9 motor , my question is do i need long shaft or short ? use it only in local lakes , how much should a used motor cost maybe early 1980 to 1990, thx.

Measure the transom, 15-16" short shaft, 20" long shaft. 9.9 around 350-550, 15hp 600-1200.00 used.

Motor prices can vary quite a bit depending on where you are located and for some areas, what time of year you buy. Around here you can find 10-25hp motors ranging from 300-650 depending on age and condition. Of course these prices are for motors at least 10yrs old or older. I just had a 1989 8hp+fuel line+6 gal. tank given to me. It's going to take about $100 in parts to get it lake ready but it runs great so I can live with that price. :lol:
