ok need pics of the locking device for 40 hp 97 model yam 2 stroke that locks it down for underway my lever is there but it dont connect to anything like its been removed and i need to know what parts to get i tryed google and wasnt able to get an accurate parts list well not sure of what parts are missing diagram i found was confusing for this flky redneck

Hopefully your motor isn't locked down when under way in the forward direction, but see if you can spot the part in question on this diagram.

that's same diagram i had found but cant tell whats not there i see it has the power tilt but whats the manual lock. or am i not seeing it. ok my evenrude has a lever that locks and unlocks for tilted postion and in the running postion so when you hit reverse it wontt rise up. my yam. has the lever to lock it up on one side and on the othier side there is a lever but nothing to it. so when u hit reverse the motor rises very annoying at the ramp. there are to springs up under there but there just dangling not attached. this boat sat at dealers for close to year and i think it was robbed

I'm thinking yours might have had the power tilt originally and wouldn't have had the lock installed because it had tilt. And someone robbed the tilt off of it.

i think your correct i think i might try and get this one on ebay it's used but will give the parts i need and cheaper than piece by piece

Are you sure it will fit your motor? It says it's for a 92-93.
