Got a couple free engines from a buddy. A Johnson 9.9 and a Mercury 50hp. Both ran when put up with a tarp over 10ish years ago. The ID plate is missing so how else can I tell what years it is? I want to order parts to see if I can get it running. Any insight is appreciated.

No expert, but I'm guessing early 80's. I have a 1979 evinrude 9.9 and yours looks almost identical to it except for the wiring which makes me think a few years newer.

Black painted block means that this is 1985 or later. Looking at the cowling, this looks like an 89 or 90. As stated before, there is a little silver plug that should have the model number stamped on it. It's right above the top cylinder, on the starboard side.
