I am looking for a recommendation on an engine maintenance/repair manual that will cover a 1999 Yamaha C90 2 stroke. A few years ago I had to replace the CDI pack and since then the engine has been difficult to start and will stall when I put it in gear while at idle speed. The local mechanic that works on my engine is trying to adjust the timing for me but is more familiar with OMC engines than Yamaha and needs some clarification of how to make proper adjustments. It also appears that some of the linkages have been changed from the factory setup. When the mechanic checked the idle speed timing it was set at 10 deg so he changed it to 5 deg which helped tremendously with start up and engine shut off when shifting from neutral to forward. Since things seem to be all out of whack I want to be 100% sure that the linkages and timing are set to factory standards.

I found this manual on Amazon, "Seloc Engine Manual for 1997 - 2009 Yamaha 2 - Stroke Outboards". Is this the best manual available and will it give me the information for adjusting the timing?

FWIW I would never buy, trust or even read any OB engine manual published by Seloc or Clymer. They are 'generic' at best and omit specific setup information for YOUR engine model at worst.

First - Did you look for your manual here? https://www.tinboats.net/manuals/

Second - You should be able to download a FACTORY OEM manual in PDF form, for that engine for $25 or less.

One source, but needs Flashplayer: http://boatinfo.no/lib/yamaha/manuals/1997-2003yamaha.html

Here's another one for $25, but I cannot confirm by the 'TRLX' moniker whether that is your OB engine or not, so you should find out what your specific model is:

Thanks for the information and yes mine is a C90TRLX. I will try and download the manual when I get home this evening on my iPad.

I was able to download the Yamaha service manual on my laptop last night, my iPad would only display a few pages of the pdf. It appears to have the information I was looking for. Thanks for the advice and directing me away from the SELOC manual.

After a quick review of the Yamaha Service manual for timing adjustment there appears to be two methods for adjustment. One method is by setting the timing plate and control linkage. The other method is by using a timing light with a test prop. I don't have a test prop to work with so is the first method acceptable or does it require both methods for a proper adjustment?
