Indiana DNR launches iPhone app
People who enjoy any of the DNR's wide variety of properties across Indiana and own an iPhone can benefit from a new phone application.

The DNR iPhone app provides virtually all the information needed when planning an outdoor activity at one of these sites. DNR properties include fish and wildlife areas, forests, historic sites, state park inns, and nature preserves, as well as 24 state parks and eight reservoirs.
"Indiana has a great wealth of natural and cultural resources, and we are always looking for new ways to connect Hoosiers to those resources," said Dan Bortner, director of the DNR Division of State Parks and Reservoirs. "We're glad to be a part of DNR's efforts to use today's technology."
The Indiana DNR iPhone application features:
- Location mapping for state parks, where to hunt or fish, and additional properties of interest
- Distances to park or fishing/hunting areas in relation to the user's current location
- Fees and regulations for all state properties and outdoor recreation sites
- Links to camping or state park inn reservation sites
- Links to fishing or hunting license purchasing sites
- Reserved hunt registration
- Nature brochures and Indiana fishing species guide
- RSS feeds of Indiana DNR news
- Links to Indiana DNR websites
DNR director of communications Phil Bloom said this is one more example of the many options of staying informed about DNR activities.
"We live in an increasingly mobile society in which people have a variety of ways to gather the information they need," he said. "This continues DNR's effort to stay connected with our customers and for our customers to stay connected to us."
The application was developed by the DNR Web team in the Division of Communications and Indiana Interactive. They welcome user feedback about the app, which should be sent to [email protected] Applications for Blackberry and Android phones are under development.

Cabela's Launches Hunting App for iPhone and Android Mobile Devices
SIDNEY, Neb. -Cabela's Incorporated (NYSE: CAB) and Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) have announced the release of the first mobile navigation application specifically designed for hunters. Developed by Trimble Outdoors, the Cabela's Recon Hunt app runs on iPhone and Android devices and provides hunters with a full lineup of outdoor and navigation features, including detailed topographical maps, point-to-point GPS navigation, a digital compass and weather forecasts.
"Cabela's Recon Hunt is the real deal," said Tom Rosdail, Cabela's vice president of marketing and licensing. "It's an impressive combination of Trimble Outdoors' expertise as a leader in GPS technology for phone apps and five decades of Cabela's experience as the World's Foremost Outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear."
Rosdail said the app went through extensive field testing with some of Cabela's most active hunters.
The Recon Hunt app uses the GPS built into iPhones and Android-compatible devices, so no data or phone signal is needed for users to log their locations. Hunters can collect waypoints, tracks, photos, videos and audio clips in the field. The app tracks other essential hunting information too: weather, sun/moon phases, trip stats and ballistics data. Users also can view recommended gear lists and access the cabelas.com online store right from their phones.
"Recon Hunt answers many of the unique demands and navigation needs that hunters face in the field," said Rich Rudow, general manager for Trimble Outdoors. "It's been a pleasure to closely work with Cabela's to create such a useful app tailored for hunting."
