Johnson 8HP help

I have a 1990s model Johnson 8hp that does not want to stay running. The motor fires up just fine and will idle for about 5-10 seconds and then cuts off. Any ideas why? I was thinking maybe a carb clean because it has been sitting for a few months while I have been away, but I'm not sure if that will help.

Carb is a good place to start, but it sounds like you're loosing prime. Pump is a possibility.

Thanks. I guess I will take it into a shop to have someone smarter than me look at it.

Maybe try new gas before you take it in. If you have ethanol in it, and didn't use Stabil....it may be the fuel. Doesn't cost any thing to try.

check that the fuel pump is functional. Kind of sounds like you're filling the bowl with fuel prior to start but it is not refilling as the motor runs.

* Edit.... just noticed your run time is seconds so maybe not.

Either way, pull the output of the pump and see if you get fuel flow when the motor turns.
