That year was just fine. It was after the age of electric shift (1962 - '70) after hydroelectric shift ('71 - '72) and after hydromechanical shift ('73 - '77). And before the Ficht fuel injection (I think 1997 or so, and up until 2000 or so). If you take care of it, it should do you alright. The V4 crossflow was a real good design for Johnson/Evinrude.

Nope, bubbleback refers to the exhaust restrictor plate. Instead of being flat, it has a bubble shape to it, sometimes giving it a slight power increase with no difference in fuel consumption. I am not very familiar with these, so if you want to know more, you will probably have to search somewhere else. I have heard that they make servicing the thermostats a pain in the neck.
